Oceans are essential to the balance of our planet. They produce over 50% of the oxygen we breathe, absorb a quarter of global CO₂ emissions, host millions of living species, and provide a vital source of livelihood for more than 3 billion people.
Yet every year, between 5 and 13 million tons of plastic enter the oceans, endangering more than 180 marine species. Turtles, whales, birds, and fish can become entangled in abandoned nets or ingest microplastics formed from the breakdown of larger waste.
In response to this environmental emergency, we have chosen to support Ogyre, an Italian tech startup that is also a B Corp and benefit corporation. Ogyre empowers fishers to collect marine waste and helps companies meet their ESG goals by using technology as a tool to protect the sea.
The name Ogyre comes from ocean gyres, the large circular currents that regulate marine ecosystems. These same currents are now sadly known for accumulating massive amounts of plastic. Starting from this concept, Ogyre has built a positive circular model that allows anyone who cares about ocean health to make a real contribution.
At Teoresi, environmental and social sustainability is a foundational part of how we do business. For us, innovation means using technology in a conscious and responsible way to generate a positive impact on the world around us. From this shared vision and commitment to action come our partnerships, built on concrete results, authentic relationships, and shared purpose.
Living our values with Teoresi Go!
This partnership is part of Teoresi Go!, our program that shows how we translate ESG commitments into tangible actions.
In the coming months, we will support the collection of 1,000 kilograms of marine waste through Ogyre’s Fishing for litter network. This international community of fishers collects debris during regular fishing trips, with a focus on recycling and regeneration.
June 2025: Ocean Partners
To mark World Oceans Month in June 2025, we are joining the Ocean Challenge as a partner. This campaign, promoted by Ogyre, raises awareness of marine ecosystems and aims to remove 28,000 kilograms of waste by the end of the month, thanks to the efforts of more than 30 partner organizations.
The impact is also social. The initiative supports local communities by sustaining fishing activities and providing financial contributions to fishers for each cleanup trip and each kilogram of waste collected.
Transparency and traceability through blockchain
Technology plays a key role in Ogyre’s model. Every kilogram of waste collected is tracked and certified using blockchain technology. This ensures data security, prevents tampering, and guarantees reliability. The platform, developed with KNOBS, records every step of the process from collection to disposal.
From awareness to action: our journey starts in Recco
Our journey officially began on May 27 with a beach clean-up activity in Recco (GE), involving part of the Ogyre team. During the initiative, Edoardo Brodasca, an environmental and eco-oriented communication expert—guided us through an exploration of the coastal ecosystem, helping us understand the impact of plastic production and use, as well as the consequences of improper waste disposal on marine biodiversity.
At the end of the activity, the data on the collected materials was recorded and submitted to Marine LitterWatch, an initiative by the European Environment Agency that enables the collection of reliable and comparable data on marine pollution.
This kind of information, gathered during coastal clean-ups, holds value beyond simple monitoring: it provides a solid, verifiable foundation for supporting the development of effective environmental policies and regulations. Thanks to tools like this, structural changes have been made over the years. One example is the replacement of plastic cotton buds with paper ones in Italy, introduced by Legislative Decree 196/2017, which was strongly supported by evidence-based lobbying from environmental associations at the European level. A virtuous example of how coordinated action, backed by credible data, can contribute, transparently and effectively, to shaping public policy.
This is just the beginning. We will continue to share stories, spread knowledge, and most importantly, take action for a cleaner and healthier ocean.
