The use of Ethernet represents a new trend in the networking of control units in motor vehicles.
Ethernet is replacing classic automotive bus systems such as MOST, FlexRay, CAN, and LIN. The network speed and capacity made possible through Automotive Ethernet is enabling the automotive industry to develop increasingly advanced vehicle features such as adaptive cruise control, active lane departure, automatic parking systems and even fully autonomous vehicles.
Automotive Ethernet traffic cannot be monitored using the same techniques employed for buses like CAN. Ethernet networks use star topology, so there is no single point to monitor an entire network. Finally, Ethernet hardware silently discards erroneous frames, making diagnosing problem conditions difficult.
Especially designed HWs for the Automotive Ethernet are crucial.
The vehicle networking tools developed at Intrepid Control Systems – which support Ethernet as well as the other common networks – can be used in the development, testing, and validation of automotive network designs.

RAD-Galaxy
Intrepid’s RAD-Galaxy is a multi-purpose Ethernet active tap and media converter for Automotive Ethernet.

Using the RAD-Galaxy, you can monitor both sides of up to 6 BroadR-Reach® (100BASE-T1) connections, or attach your laptop to as many as 12 BroadR-Reach® ECUs or other devices. As a gateway to standard 8-wire Gigabit Ethernet, RAD-Galaxy makes any standard Ethernet device, laptop, or data logger compatible with BroadR-Reach®.

The RAD-Galaxy has 12 BroadR-Reach / 100BASE-T1 PHYs, allowing it to tap 6 links between ECUs and/or switch ports. It can also be configured to act as a media converter for up to 12 devices. In addition to its Automotive Ethernet capabilities, it offers 8x CAN FD channels, 1 LIN channel, DoIP support and standalone operation capability.

RAD-Star 2
Intrepid’s RAD-Star 2 is a multi-purpose active tap and media converter for Automotive Ethernet.

Using the RAD-Star 2, you can monitor one pair of 100BASE-T1 (BroadR-Reach®) connections, or attach your laptop to two 100BASE-T1 ECUs or other devices. As a gateway to 10/100/1000BASE-TX, RAD-Star 2 makes any standard Ethernet device, laptop, or data logger compatible with 100BASE-T1.

The RAD-Star 2 has two 100BASE-T1 (BroadR-Reach®) PHYs, allowing it to tap a single link between ECUs and/or switch ports. It can also be configured to act as a media converter for up to 2 devices. In addition to its Automotive Ethernet capabilities, it offers 2x CAN FD channels.

RAD-Gigastar
RAD-Gigastar
The RAD-Gigastar is the most versatile Automotive Ethernet network tap available.

The RAD-Gigastar works as an active tap, media converter, vehicle interface, and Ethernet data logger.
It can monitor one pair of 100/1000BASE-T1 connections with an additional pair of SFP cages to support optical/ copper SFP transceivers. In addition, the RAD-Gigastar can also operate as a programmable gateway to create an Ethernet-to-Ethernet or a CAN-Ethernet gateway.

The RAD-Gigastar makes any standard Ethernet device, laptop, or data logger compatible with 100/1000BASE-T1. In addition to its Automotive Ethernet capabilities, it offers 6x ISO CAN FD channels, 2x FlexRay channels, and standalone operation capability.

RAD-Moon

The RAD-Moon is a media converter that allows you to connect a BroadR-Reach® / 100BASE-T1 Automotive Ethernet device to a PC with a conventional 4-wire 10/100 Ethernet port. With its low cost, compact size and high performance, the RAD-Moon is ideal for monitoring, analysis, diagnostics and other applications in an Automotive Ethernet environment.

RAD-SuperMoon
Intrepid’s RAD-SuperMoon is the most advanced media converter for Automotive Ethernet applications.

Using the RAD-SuperMoon, you can convert from 100/1000BASE-T1 Automotive Ethernet to standard 10/100/1000 Ethernet, useful for connecting a PC to a 100/1000BASE-T1 host or switch.

Two RAD-SuperMoons can also be used as a pair to implement an active tap, allowing you to monitor traffic on a 100/1000BASE-T1 link between two ECUs or an ECU and a switch port.

RAD-Pluto
RAD-Pluto

Intrepid’s RAD-Pluto is the first in a family of Automotive Ethernet switches designed specifically for bench and vehicle network development. This Layer 2 switch is configurable with up to 4x 100BASE-T1 ports, a 1000BASE-T port, and a GigE/USB bridge.

The rugged package also integrates 2x CAN FD and 1x LIN channels to interface with the rest of the vehicle. All of these network interfaces are combined with an embedded processor to execute real-time Function Block scripts and C Code applications. This functionality provides the versatility needed to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.

If you are working in Automotive Ethernet development, a switch is a valuable tool for your bench. If the application is simple, forwarding 100BASE-T1 messages from port to port based on MAC address, Intrepid’s RAD-Pluto will meet your needs and give you an interface to the CAN and LIN busses. However, if the application involves AVB/TSN, a managed switch is required to support the associated protocols.

Intrepid’s RAD-Jupiter is a rugged 7-port managed switch designed specifically for bench and vehicle network development. In addition to its Ethernet functionality, it integrates many of the key CAN, LIN, and scripting features found in our ValueCAN 4 family of tools.
