On October 1st, Turin will host the Italian ENVELOPE Demo Event at Fondazione LINKS.
ENVELOPE is a Horizon Europe Innovation Action co-funded by the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking, focused on developing an open and flexible 5G-Advanced architecture to enable greater interaction between communication networks and applications.
Following the research, integration and testing preparation phases, the project is now reaching one of its most tangible milestones: validation in a real urban environment, where vehicles, networks, data and infrastructure will interact through two demonstration scenarios.
For us, the event will also be an opportunity to contribute directly to the project’s demonstration phase by providing two autonomous and connected vehicle prototypes.
What will happen during the Demo Event?
The Turin trial is designed to explore how advanced connectivity can support new services for connected and autonomous mobility.
Alongside Teoresi Group, the Italian trial involves Fondazione LINKS, the City of Turin / Torino City Lab, TIM, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Nextworks.
During the demonstration, the two prototypes will be used in two application scenarios, designed to assess how connected vehicles, infrastructure and networks can exchange and use information in a real urban environment.
In the first scenario, an autonomous vehicle will use its sensors to collect information about the surrounding environment and share it with the infrastructure. The scenario simulates the presence of a vehicle involved in an accident and makes it possible to observe how data collected on the road can contribute to the dynamic reconstruction of an accident.
The second scenario focuses on updating the maps used by autonomous vehicles. When road conditions change, for example due to an obstacle or a route becoming unavailable, this information can be shared with other connected vehicles, allowing them to receive an updated map and adjust their route accordingly.
Two different situations, united by the same requirement: enabling vehicles and infrastructure to continuously exchange information and use it while the vehicle is in motion.
Our contribution
Throughout the project, we have upgraded our prototypes with new sensors and connectivity features, working on both vehicle perception capabilities and data exchange with the infrastructure.
The vehicles integrate HD cameras, LiDAR, ultrasonic sensors, radar and GPS. The information collected is combined using sensor fusion techniques, enabling a digital reconstruction of the surrounding environment.
This work on the vehicles is part of a broader contribution to the project, which also includes the development and evaluation of tests on advanced networks and activities related to edge computing, which allows data to be processed and managed closer to the point where it is generated, reducing reliance on remote systems.
The agenda
Moderated by Luca Tremolada, the Demo Event will focus on ENVELOPE’s objectives and results, the Italian trial, and Network Exposure and Zero-Touch Automation technologies applied to connected and autonomous mobility.
The programme will also include a dedicated session on the experiments developed through the Open Calls, as well as the workshop “From Experimentation to Deployment – The Future of Connected Mobility”.
In the afternoon, starting at 2:30 PM, the demonstration session will begin, featuring live demos of the Italian trial and demonstrations related to the Open Calls.
